Mother of Pearl & Jet Bumblebee by Clissa Martin
Carefully shaped by Zuni artisans, fetishes are a physical embodiment of a living spirit. Traditionally, native peoples of the Southwest created carvings to represent the totem animals of the Six Cardinal Directions (the pivotal points of nature). Today, fetishes are fashioned after a diverse selection of animals and spirits; each with their own meanings, strengths, and weaknesses. These sculptures are made from a variety of materials, mostly stone and mineral, but organic mediums are also used, such as tagua nut and antler.
5/8 x 1 x 1/2
Daughter of Carol Martinez - the miniature horse carver known for inlaying a hand on their rumps. Sister of Felissa Martin, and cousin to Corwin Yamutewa. Clissa has created a style uniquely her own, starting out carving turtles, maidens and bears, then branching out to carve as of late; squirrels, frogs, beavers, foxes & rabbits always adding a dragonfly on the back of each animal she creates. Her fetishes often are inlaid with a dragonfly or bumblebee. Her color contrasting dragonflies are turquoise, coral, lapis and other stones.
