Pipstone Bear by Adrian Cachini
Carefully shaped by Zuni artisans, fetishes are a physical embodiment of a living spirit. Traditionally, native peoples of the Southwest created carvings to represent the totem animals of the Six Cardinal Directions (the pivotal points of nature). Today, fetishes are fashioned after a diverse selection of animals and spirits; each with their own meanings, strengths, and weaknesses. These sculptures are made from a variety of materials, mostly stone and mineral, but organic mediums are also used, such as tagua nut and antler.

Bear (Anshe): Bear was the principal animal for the Pueblo People and they are the most prevalent subject of Zuni fetishes. Bear fetishes are used for healing, protection, strength, journeying, mothering, hunting and gathering. Bear‚ hibernation reminds us of the value of going within.
Adrian has been carving since high school, he is one of the well known artisans for sgraffito art on his animals he creates. With every piece he creates Adrian's carvings always have life like realistic stunning features. His choice of stones are pipestone, fish rock, turquoise and a variety marbles , although not limited to trying newer minerals.
