Carefully shaped by Zuni artisans, fetishes are a physical embodiment of a living spirit. Traditionally, native peoples of the Southwest created carvings to represent the totem animals of the Six Cardinal Directions (the pivotal points of nature). Today, fetishes are fashioned after a diverse selection of animals and spirits; each with their own meanings, strengths, and weaknesses. These sculptures are made from a variety of materials, mostly stone and mineral, but organic mediums are also used, such as tagua nut and antler.
Badger (Donashi): Badger is aggressive and tenacious. Keeping Badger’s behavior in mind can help one accomplish a specific goal or purpose as it has a great ability to focus. Traditionally, healing properties are attributed to Badger

Bernie is a carver who’s intricate and detailed carvings are realistic as well as bold and delicate in appearance. Bernie carves fetishes that are commonly made like lizards but also more unusual ones like skunks and horned toads. Bernie's cousin is the well-known carver, Dan Quam, and his grandfather was Dallas Quam(d). Lance Cheama was an early mentor who also helped Bernie develop his talent.
